That "moral values" was identified most frequently by voters in exit polls on Nov. 2 as the issue most important to their vote is a positive thing. Values should be an important part of public discourse. That the persons who identified this preference voted heavily for President Bush is troubling, because it at least suggests that for many people, "moral values" is largely a code phrase for anti-abortion, anti-gun-control, and anti-same-sex-marriage positions.
A true values-focused dialogue would begin with recognizing that the conservative right, Christian or otherwise, does not own, nor does it define, moral values. Moral values rooted in faith can and do serve as important foundations for liberal perspectives and beliefs, as well as conservative. I would go so far as to say that it is, more than anything else, my Christian faith that makes me a liberal.
It is difficult from reading the Sermon on the Mount to determine what positions Jesus might have held about gun control, same-sex marriage, stem-cell research, or abortion. It is far less difficult to know what he would have to say about intolerance, social injustice, economic inequality, wars of aggression, and lack of humility.
Let's talk about all values, not just the ones that serve specific political agendas.
